Literacy is a Key to success for the Haitian
People
Today, more than 50%
of Haitians in Haiti are illiterate. This is due to the lack of
governmental involvement in education since more than 80% of the
schools in Haiti are privately owned. This is the twenty-first
century; therefore Haiti should have at least a 90% literacy rate.
Haiti is far behind in education compared to other countries in the
Western Hemisphere.? Where is the future of our Haitian Youths? You
can help C.H.A.N.G.E. Charity Inc. rescue our Haitian Youths out of
poverty. Although there have been some improvements over the years
to literacy and the quality of education in Haiti, it needs more
governmental involvement. The government does not provide adequate
funding for public schools and most families cannot afford the costs
of private education. Today, less than a quarter of school-age
Haitian children complete grade school, and only 1% graduate from
high school.
The lack of educational opportunities in Haiti has contributed to
many social, and economic problems. Unlike many other countries in
the Caribbean, Haiti has the highest infant mortality rate, level of
malnutrition, and the lowest life expectancy in the Western
Hemisphere. The average wage in Haiti in less than $1 per day. Every
year, many Haitians risk their lives to escape poverty in Haiti and
get a better life. Often times, many Haitians die at sea before
their reach they destinations. Not only is learning to read and
write very crucial for Haitians, but having adequate education is
also the key to alleviating poverty in Haiti.
The public school system in Haiti is inadequate to meet the
growing demand. Of those children who attend school, only 25% of
primary school children and 12% of secondary school students are
enrolled in public schools. The remaining students attend private
schools, which are not regulated by the state, and have poor quality
of education. In most of these schools classes are being taught by
unqualified teachers who barely completed high school. In addition,
teachers teach these classrooms without textbooks, and also without
being paid for up to six-months and therefore are not very motivated
to teach.
C.H.A.N.G.E. is working to provide many young Haitians the
opportunities to rise above poverty and achieve their greatest
potentials.? The Charity has helped many communities and churches
establish and run literacy centers for adults and children, allowing
them to enroll in a traditional school. Through these centers,
thousands of Haitians have learned to read, write and develop other
skills needed to break the bonds of poverty. We believe the best way
to help fight poverty is to help the poor help themselves through
educational opportunities. We believe that through
education all things are possible. Currently C.H.A.N.G.E.
Charity Inc. supports 100's of children with their
educations.
